This blog post will be about my social action project that I ran throughout Block 2 of my Teaching Experience in my fourth year of my B.Ed degree.

1. Consider the effectiveness of the project, considering each component and reflecting on your learning experience as well as the impact on the school or community.

My social action project, called Food for Furry Friends was extremely effective as this project had a big impact on the school as well as the community. The project benefited the school as many of the learners were educated on animals and the SPCA throughout the social action project. Many learners did not know about the SPCA, what they do at the SPCA or even that they rely on donations to feed the animals that they have taken in under their care. My social action project benefited the community as well, as the SPCA is part of the community and they were the one we (Curro Academy Parkdene) were doing collections for.

2. How has service-learning changed your personally?

The service-learning project has allowed me to further develop my love and care for animals and the want to help animals to the best of my ability. Animals have always had a soft spot in my heart and I will always try my best to help as many as I possibly can.

3. How has service-learning developed you professionally? What new knowledge, skills and/or attitudes have your gained?

The service-learning project allowed my to further develop my team work skills as I had to continuously work with the head of outreach to ensure that the project was doing well and that everything was going to plan daily. We daily touch base with each other to ensure that we were checking off everything that needed to be done daily and ensure collections were done.

Describe the benefit of this initiative to the school and comment on its sustainability.

The school benefited from this initiative as it educated its learners on the SPCA and animals. When I started the initiative, I noticed that many learners did not have any knowledge on the SPCA or the animals that they take under their care. Therefore, this initiative, not only educated them on the SPCA and their animals, but also the animals on the street (where to take them, who to call etc) as well as animals they may own as pets and how to take care of them properly. This initiative is sustainable as the SPCA will always need donations to keep the animals under their care in good health. Therefore, as long as the teachers and head of outreach continuously remind the learners of the SPCA, the initiative will be sustainable.

Well done on creating such an amazing social action project! Food for Furry Friends was such a creative project and I enjoyed reading how this impacted the school and the learners positively as the children had to opportunity to be educated about the SPCA and were able to understand how a small donation can go a long way. I like how this social action project has further developed your love for animals and how you want to help animals in any way you can. It was important for the learners to learn about the SPCA as well as being informed about who to call or where to take stray animals, when they are found roaming around our streets. I also…
